Santa Lucia Palin Murari Borba was farmer's daughter from Murari's Borba, born in Italy 1904, who invented the natural handcrafted soap with essential oils in Brazil .She moved to Brazil in 1917 from hers home in Toscany where she had trained to make essential oils from the plants. Opened a small shop in the then fashionable residential area of Brazil, Sao Paulo, and attracted the custom of many wealthy families. She noticed that the Sao Paulo upper classes cultivated a delicate white complexion whereas a tanned face was associated with the working class who toiled in the outdoors. Santa Lucia Palin Murari Borba realised that there was a need for a gentle soap for these delicate complexions. After much trial and error she found a way of removing the impurities of the base soap before adding the delicate perfume of garden flowers. Lucia Palin gave the soap an aroma reminiscent of an rainforest tree and wild flowers. We are still used today the same natural oils and pure natural ingredients combined with the delicate fragrance . Approximately 40 different choices are available from an array of categories - citrus fruits, plant and flower extract, from the tree, oatmeal, goat's milk and buttermilk, espresso coffee, from the sea, clays, herbs and triple-milled French. She took on a partner, her grandson Borba and they moved to new premises in the South of Brazil where there was more immigrants such as Italians and Germans. Santa Lucia retired in 1980, leaving her grandaughter to continue the business of the USA-NC firm of Borba & DiTomasso. Lucia Palin Borba is alive and lives healthy in Brazil.

Why you may ask, should I buy handmade soap when I can get more soap for less money at the grocery store?

Handmade soap is a cleanser made with simple ingredients that are good for your skin. In the handcrafted soap making process, oils and fats are combined with lye to produce soap and glycerin.Some people may question the use of lye in handmade soap. The fact is that all soap is made with lye. What needs to be made clear is that once the process of saponification is complete, the lye and oil molecules have combined and chemically changed into soap and glycerin. ALL bar soaps are made with lye, however, when made correctly, there is NO LYE remaining in the final bar of soap. Whether your soap is manufactured by large corporations, or smaller handcrafted soap makers, the above rings true, regardless. Lye must be used to make the soap, but there should never be any remaining lye in the final bar to hurt the skin. Saponification is the chemical reaction created by combining these oils or fats with lye and water.

Glycerin is naturally produced during the soap making process. In fact, pound for pound, glycerin costs more than soap, which is why most soap companies remove the glycerin from the soap and sell it to manufacturers of lotion. We do not remove the glycerin from our handcrafted soap, so when you purchase soap made by us, it contains all of the naturally occurring glycerin.
